Jazz Guitarist Extraordinaire…

Posted in Uncategorized on July 13, 2010 by djazzologist

Meet David O’Rourke:

One of the most extraordinary and versatile jazz guitarists I have ever met!

His ability to master the old greats of jazz guitar and still maintain

an authentic monstrous voice on the fretboard is astonishing.

DAVID O’ROURKE – THE PRIZE – CD

When it arrived in the post I nearly fell off the sofa trying to get the wrapper off! Why is this Irish born jazz guitarist such a hidden talent, somewhat comparable to the infamous and esoteric Dennis Budimir. Although, in saying that, it is also true that David O’Rourke is highly respected among his international jazz peers, and is as greatly talented and multifaceted as the great Louis Stewart among us Irish Jazzer’s who know and understand pure raw handmade talent. David is truly an authentic jazz guitarist with the swinging tone of Wes Montgomery, the creativity of Jimmy Raney, and the flowing long exotic lines of Tal Farlow.

Where do I start, regarding his original tune “Standing Eight”, and his magnificent interpretations of the old standards, somethings just have to be heard for the epiphanous alarm to sound! From the word go, David O’Rourke just smoked. The whole band are outstanding as I’m sure any fanatical Grant Green fan would notice, because they did actually accompany Grant Green! Just goes to show you that they enjoyed his chops enough to want to cut a CD with him. David O’Rourke is a hidden jewel of golden old school jazz guitar. I don’t say that without just cause, I have listened to this CD with my earphones hugging my ears, investigating his fluid yet punchy approach, the outcome is that of a master picker awakening the student’s ear in every listening moment!

I once owned nearly every possible classic jazz guitar LP that I could find in San Francisco, and man, this CD would be a welcome face among such players as: George Van Eps, Johnny Smith, Tal Farlow, Ted Greene, Pat Martino, George Benson, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Dempsey Wright, Carl Kress, Dennis Budimir, Jimmy Raney, etc…

Do yourself a favor, because your jazz guitar shelf has a void spot if this CD is not there! One of the best finds I’ve ever come across regarding a hidden classic jazz guitarist.
